Corporate employee directory first type of social media site

Perhaps you haven’t thought of it this way, but the corporate intranets that were developed to include an employee directory, complete with photos and more background information than you’d find in a straightforward contact list, were some of the first online social media sites.
Here’s a link to Mark Gallagher’s presentation of an employee directory, an internal phonebook on a corporate intranet, complete with design ideas and screenshots.
It’s a few years old but I think sheds some light on some of the first corporate uses of the tools we now find commonplace in sites like Facebook and LinkedIn.
