Public relations professionals versus legal professionals

I have a client, a start-up company, who seems much more enamored with legal counsel than public relations counsel.
I’ve experienced this type of opposition before — I’ve worked for Merrill Lynch in New York City, and have been a public relations counselor to Sprint Wireless in Las Vegas (just a couple examples that come to [...]

Free conference calls

I was recently introduced to a service that provides businesses, organizations and individuals with a free conference on demand phone number.
The service is FreeConference.com.
I have had a conference calling bridge as part of my VoIP phone system in the past. Now I can have basically the same bridge features for free. Awesome!
The free service includes [...]

SMS business cards

I ran across a cool new tool for exchanging contact information. It’s called Contxts.
Clever name.
You can guess from the name that what it does is facilitate distribution of contact information (up to 140 characters worth) via text messaging.
For example, you can text “prpete” to 50500 and you’ll receive a text message with my business card [...]

Golden Spike Awards

Today I attended the awards luncheon for the Public Relations Society of America Greater Salt Lake and Utah Valley Chapters and the International Association of Business Communicators Utah.
It was held at the Rice-Eccles Stadium on the University of Utah campus.
It just so happens that Saturday is the University of Utah versus Brigham Young University football [...]

GE launches blog to communicate directly with stakeholders

This summer the SEC said it was okay for corporations to communicate with investors through the Web. Last month GE joined the ranks of corporate America sporting a company blog launched for just such a purpose. It’s called GEReports.com.
The reviews are mixed. Some wonder what the motivation is behind the posts. Others fear it discriminates [...]

PR tips for entrepreneurs

The Web is full of information, even on how to best secure media coverage for businesses.
I was introduced to this site, The Toilet Paper Entrepreneur, from a Twitter friend.
I highly recommend this post that outlines The 54 Best PR Tips for Entrepreneurs.

Celebrating Veterans Day with a visit to Gov Gab, a U.S. government blog

Did you know there are about 23 million veterans in the U.S.? Seems like a lot, doesn’t it?
I learned this statistic from the government blog, Gov Gab. The blog is described by its authors as follows:
We are federal employees who work in the Office of Citizen Services and Communications at the U.S. General Services Administration. [...]

Obama uses the Web to his advantage

One of the most impressive components of President-Elect Barack Obama’s campaign to me was his use of the Internet.
Within a day of being elected, his team rolled out Change.gov, a Web site created to provide updates, news and information on the forthcoming Obama administration.
It’s a new dawn and a new day in so many ways. [...]

Codella helps start Social Media Club of Salt Lake City

The art and science of public relations and business communication is changing. Technology has a much larger footprint as individuals and organizations move further and further into the digital and mobile age.
For this reason Pete Codella, APR has delved deep into social media as a tool for business to communicate with key constituencies.
And for this [...]

Obama won because of better marketing

As an Accredited Public Relations counselor and professional business communicator I cannot agree more with BusinessWeek’s claim that better marketing is what got Barack Obama elected.
When it comes right down to it, the art of communicating effectively is when you persuade people to your point of view. Nowhere is that process more apparent then in [...]
