Google’s golden triangle
Posted in Information on July 24, 2008
If you understand how Google works, you’re better able to utilize it to your advantage.
For this post, let’s discuss the benefits of securing top Google search placement.
As I’ve said before, your organization’s home page is really Google search, not your main website. People begin their search for company names or products in Google, then end up on your site (if you’re lucky).
So how do you ensure you’re showing up on the search results page?
The top links, there can be up to three, appear in a yellow shaded box. They’re sponsored links, or ads. The page also has sponsored links on the right side. These are all pay per click ads. These links account for 25% of clicks.
The organic search results account for the other 75% of search results. There are 10 listed per page and those towards the top three to four receive most of the clicks. Research shows that these organic links receive more traffic, stay longer in search results and are viewed by smarter people (those with a higher level of education).
The top left corner of the Google search page has been called the Google Golden Triangle. You want to do all you can to control the content there, especially in the organic results.
